| I am the lead singer of Black Lab Trio and have the honor of playing with such Seattle greats as Kurt Shapiro and James Whiton, Andre Thomas, Ted Burik, Merwin Kato, Larry Halloway, Clipper Anderson, Jerry Garcia and Ken French, Hans Brehmer, Alexey Nikoleav, Osama Affifi and Garey Williams and Cary Black, Hans Brehmer. A native of the Seattle area in the early years at Samammish High School, I was trained by Jack Halm, a local great who still teaches at the Bellevue School District and at Seattle Pacific University. From 1986 to 1988 I was awarded first place for vocals three years in a row at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Competition. I studied Music and History at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I developed a deep understanding of the blues and the origins of the music that I sing today. After taking a break from singing professionally for several years to raise my family, I began singing again in various clubs and competitions in Seattle and Tacoma, including Tulas and Thompsons Point-of-View. I studied voice with Cornish College of the Arts Instructor Andrienne Wilson from October 2004 until March 2005, and I have been with the Black Lab Trio ever since March 2003. My influences include, Diane Reeves, Nina Simone, Tuck and Patti, and especially my favorite: Sarah Vaughan who I think was the best jazz vocalist of all time. But my real inspiration is my family. My children actually like jazz and appreciate the art of music. I am blessed to three beautiful children who keep me busy and make me laugh all at the same time: Sherman, Soloman and my latest release Madeline. |
